Help is available

If you've been harmed, the most important thing is to make sure you're safe.

If the person harming you still has immediate access to you, seek help immediately here. If you're not safe in your own home, for you to be able to start your journey to heal, it's very important to be in a place wherein the person harming you no longer has any access to you. Seek help immediately here if you're currently not in a safe place.

If you've been harmed in the past and the person who harmed you no longer has any access to you, the first thing is for you to begin your journey to heal. Whichever path you take to heal, you can choose whether or not to report the abuse to the NZ Police or Child, Youth and Family (CYF). If you choose to report, you can do so now, or later when you’re ready.  However, the sooner you report, the greater the chance of the person who harmed you being held accountable.

Lots of survivors say talking is what helped them the most. It is ok to wait to find the right person, someone you trust and makes you feel comfortable.

Counsellors and therapists can be great people to talk to. Whoever you choose, it has to be someone you feel comfortable with.

If you're ready to get support, contact HELP. If you're under 17 and feel unsafe where you are, you can also contact CYF. If you know you're in immediate danger, don't hesitate to ring the Police on 111.
